How IoT Works (Basic Overview)

The IoT process typically starts with devices (things) that securely communicate with an IoT platform.

  1. Sensors capture data: Devices embedded with sensors capture physical input from the surroundings, such as temperature, weight, or gas leakage. This raw data is converted into electrical signals.
  2. Connectivity: The captured data is then transmitted via connectivity methods (wired or wireless) like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, or cellular protocols (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G).
  3. IoT Gateway: IoT gateways provide seamless interconnection between edge devices (sensors/actuators) and the IoT cloud. They manage data traffic, offer security through encryption, and can process data to minimize large data sizes before forwarding to the cloud.
  4. IoT Cloud: Data from sensors, transmitted via connectivity and gateways, can be stored and processed in the IoT cloud. The cloud acts as the “brain” of the IoT ecosystem, where decisions are made based on processed data. While optional, it’s crucial for large ecosystems and real-time applications to avoid latency. Edge computing can also provide local processing.
  5. IoT Analytics and Data Management: Raw data is converted into useful insights through tasks like data extraction, analytics, aggregation, and classification. Deep learning can be used to predict data.
  6. User Interface: Finally, a user interface allows users to monitor and interact with the IoT application. This includes features like notifications, alerts, remote control capabilities, and the ability to observe live data trends.
  7. Actuators provide output: Based on the processed data and user commands, actuators provide physical output, such as turning on a motor or an LED, to act on situations.
